Ear Wax Removal (Microsuction)
Blocked or muffled hearing is often down to a simple build-up of ear wax. Microsuction is a widely recommended, modern way to clear it — no water, no syringing — and we arrange appointments across the west, north-west and midlands, with home visits available.
Why microsuction?
A trained practitioner uses a fine suction device, under direct vision, to remove wax without water. It's generally more comfortable than traditional syringing and suitable for a wider range of ears, including those with a history of ear infections or surgery.
| Microsuction | Ear syringing | |
|---|---|---|
| Uses water | No | Yes, under pressure |
| How it works | Fine suction, under direct vision | Water flushes wax out |
| Suitable if you've had ear surgery or infections | Generally yes | Often not recommended |
Home visits
If travelling to a clinic is difficult — for you or a parent you're booking on behalf of — we can arrange a home visit instead, anywhere across our coverage area. The same trained practitioner and equipment come to you, so the procedure itself is exactly the same as it would be in a clinic; the only difference is where it happens. This is especially useful for older adults, anyone with mobility difficulties, or anyone who simply finds waiting rooms stressful.
Why does wax build up?
Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural, protective substance, and it usually clears on its own without any help. For some people it builds up faster than it clears — often due to a narrow or oddly-shaped ear canal, regular hearing aid or earbud use, or simply producing more wax than average — and that's when it can start affecting hearing. Read our full guide to why ear wax builds up and when to get it checked, what's safe to try at home, and whether it's covered by a medical card.

Frequently asked questions
- What is microsuction?
- Microsuction is a method of removing ear wax where a trained practitioner uses a gentle suction device, under direct vision through a microscope or headlight, to clear the wax. Unlike traditional ear syringing, it doesn't use water.
- Which areas do you cover?
- We arrange microsuction appointments across Sligo, Galway, Donegal, Cavan, Roscommon, Leitrim, Mayo, Clare, Westmeath and Longford, including home visits for anyone who finds it difficult to travel.
- Do I need to do anything before my appointment?
- No special preparation is usually needed. If you'd like to soften the wax beforehand, olive oil drops for a few days prior can help — but this isn't required.
- What's the difference between ear syringing and microsuction?
- Ear syringing uses water under pressure to flush wax out, while microsuction uses a fine suction device with no water at all. Microsuction is generally more comfortable and suitable for a wider range of ears, including anyone with a history of ear infections, perforations or surgery.
- Is ear wax removal available at home?
- Yes — if travelling to a clinic is difficult, we can look at arranging a home visit for microsuction, anywhere across our coverage area.
- How much does ear wax removal cost?
- Cost varies, and is best confirmed directly when you enquire or book. Get in touch and we'll be able to give you a clear answer for your situation.
